Packing & Preparation
Pack This
- Broken-in hiking boots — do not show up with fresh boots
- Layers: cold mornings, hot afternoons, rain any time in April
- Rain shell and pack cover
- Daypack with 2–3 liters of water capacity
- Trekking poles if your knees have miles on them
- Passport, plus copies; some sites check ID
Prep Before You Fly
- Train with weight and elevation for at least eight weeks out. Cusco sits above 11,000 ft.
- Two acclimatization days are built in — use them. Altitude sickness ends trips, not fitness.
- Talk to your doctor about acetazolamide before you travel.
- April is shoulder season: fewer crowds, real chance of afternoon rain.
Frequently Asked Questions
How hard is the Machu Picchu trek?
High difficulty. You're hiking multi-day at 11,000+ feet with long days on foot. Two acclimatization days are built into the schedule, but you should train with a loaded pack and hills for at least eight weeks.
Do I have to hike, or can I take the train and bus?
The trip is built around hiking in and arriving before the tour buses stage. If you need a lower-impact option, tell us on the inquiry form and we'll tell you honestly whether this is the right trip for you.
When are the exact 2027 dates?
The window is April 2027. Exact dates lock roughly 90 days out, and everyone on the interest list gets them first along with final pricing.
What is Choquequirao and why is it included?
It's Machu Picchu's sister city — comparable stonework, a fraction of the visitors, because there's no train to it. We run a private excursion there, which is the part most Peru itineraries skip entirely.
Is this trip only for veterans?
It's built for veterans and service members, but spouses and friends who can handle the altitude and mileage are welcome.
What about altitude sickness?
It's the single most common reason people miss a summit day. We stage arrival in Cusco with two easy days first, keep the pace honest, and travel with guides who handle altitude problems for a living.
